Question

I am starting a limited liability company providing specialized training for the construction industry. I would appreciate any suggestions on shopping for a bookkeeper (and/or tax consultant) and a lawyer to help me set up the business. –George Ferguson

Answer

Finding the right person to help you set-up and run your business will require some legwork. The best place to start: The web. Visit web sites of organizations such as FindLaw and the American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers, which provide hundreds of professionals to choose from.

To narrow down your search, look for attorney's with experience representing companies in your field and who can work within your price range, says Dawn M. Greenberg, a tax principal at Cowan, Gunteski & Company, an accounting and business consulting firm in Toms River, N.J.

When looking for a bookkeeper, make sure you get references, she says. At freelance web sites like Elance, Guru and oDesk, you can check out previous client reviews. Also, ask them if they're up to date on the latest bookkeeping software and be specific about the tasks you want them to perform.

Good Advice, although one must take precaution when dealing with lawyers. Many have a reputation for being 'sharks'. There is a rating scale for lawyers (Martindale-Hubbell) of which most people are unaware. AV is the highest rating.
