Estimating Start-up Costs

May 8, 2009

Question:

I'm thinking about starting a business. I have a few ideas, but I'm not sure what to do — or if I have enough money to get started. How much money do I need to open a business? -Tony (last name and hometown unknown)

Answer:

While it's difficult to estimate exactly how much you'll need to start-up without knowing what kind of business you wish to launch, there are some considerations every business owner should make. First, start with the basics: What kind of business do you want to start? A web-based business, for example, might simply entail buying a couple of Internet domains and hiring a web designer. (Read our story on how to launch a web site on the cheap.)

Companies that make and sell products, however, often have significantly more high-cost obstacles to overcome. Among other things, they need to think about everything from product design and packaging to paying for manufacturing runs and landing distribution deals. Then, there's that pesky part about securing your property from potential fraudsters. Attaining patents and trademarks could catapult your start-up costs. (Here's our story about how to fend off potential copycats.)

For a better idea about what you'll need to launch, seek out advice, says Karin Abarbanel, a small business start-up consultant in Montclair, N.J. The Small Business Association offers counseling and assistance through a number of programs like SCORE, a troupe of retired business pros across the country who can field questions.
