| Wow - great article. This is something I've dealt with in several businesses. As you point out, I think the real trick is being flexible and keeping the communication open. I once worked with a staff person who was diagnosed with a debilitating illness right in the middle of a huge project. We brought in a short term contractor to take the bulk of his work, but kept him updated on the progress. He was able to concentrate on his health knowing that he could re-engage when he was better.
