Laid off -- "job eliminated" Posted: 4:39 PM On March 31, 2009
It's nice to give out tips, but when the layoffs truly come and you're caught in it, the only thing that happens is that someone from HR shows up in your boss's office, tells you your job is eliminated and today is the last day they will pay you. HR tells you to file for unemployment compensation and 'assures' you it is not job performance but that any 'references' must come through them (otherwise the boss and anyone you worked with is forbidden to talk to reference requestors). They then escort you to your desk, make you pick up your personal belongings (not even allow you to turn off your computer) and escort you to the nearest elevator with security watching just around the corner. THAT is the reality of layoffs!

If you do survive a layoff, you can almost bet the house on one thing: you will get additional responsibilities. From what I have seen, even though there are fewer employees the amount of work does not decrease. Those who remain get to pick up the slack (...'give them more responsibility'). I have survived numerous layoffs where I work. Each time I get more responsibility but not surprisingly there is no increase in pay. However, I am thankful to be employed but it would be nice to get a pay increase to compensate for the 60+ hour work weeks (goes up each year about 5 hours per week and I am salary as well).
