Another way to go about this without having to necessarily hire a web designer, etc, is to start with a free blog, such as with Blogger or my favorite, Wordpress.com. Both offer templates you can install and change fairly easily in most cases. I do have some web and graphic design experience, but it has been much easier to learn at what I'd call the 'blogging level.' If you decide to monetize from the site, in that you want customers to be able to purchase product directly, then go to Wordpress.org for more info to set it up.
