In Focus: GotVMail, A Phone System for Entrepreneurs

September 26, 2008
Small-business owners, you deserve a moment in the spotlight. In this regular column, we highlight entrepreneurs from all over the U.S. who can answer the question: "What makes you stand out from the crowd?" We know you're proud of your accomplishments — now you can tell the world about them, too.

Siamak Taghaddos and David Hauser, co-founders of GotVMail, answer our questions:

What makes you stand out from the crowd?

We decided early on that we wanted to control the direction of our own company. That’s why we’ve not only shunned venture capital funding, we decided to build all of our own technology and craft it specifically for our customers’ needs rather than just buy and rehab it. This independence has helped GotVMail grow from a student project at Babson College in 2003 to an Inc. 500 company in just a few years.

Siamak Taghaddos Our names are: Siamak Taghaddos and David Hauser
Our business is: GotVMail (GotVMail is a web-based communications system. The company hosts servers that route calls to a business owner's phone through an Internet connection. Those calls can then be routed to whatever destination desired—be it a cellphone, office phone or home. GotVMail also provides toll-free and local numbers, customized greetings and voicemail services.)

What's the best part about owning your own business?

First, we’re proud that we’re able to empower tens of thousands of entrepreneurs to succeed with our virtual telecommunications tools, which help bypass the obstacles that mobile small businesses face. Also, by giving our employees generous incentives and vacation packages, we believe that we have created a culture for “A” players to excel — something that only works when you have confidence in the people you work with.

What's the biggest hurdle you've overcome?

We not only had to build a company, our brand, and drive customer acquisitions in a hard to reach market, we had to build awareness for an unknown industry at the same time. Unlike the credit card or web hosting industries that are well known, the virtual phone system category was not. So we had to introduce entrepreneurs to a new way of business communications and then acquire them as customers.

What's the best business advice you can offer?

Focus on building a company with real customers that need or want your product or service. Don’t worry about venture capital funding. If there are people willing to pay for what you do, that is the best way to start a company. Take it from there.

JRE,

We implemented this policy to ensure that a customer who searches for a number is able to reserve it without an issue in case they return. This is an automated process that has helped out hundreds of customers who search for and reserve a number a few days later. However, anyone who calls our support team is given the opportunity to release it to any other company. If you called, and the number was not release right away, then it was our mistake as it is not our policy.

If you still need the number, please call us at 800-820-8210 24/7 and we'll get you the number.

Although this company is not doing anything illegal it surely isn't ethical. I recently made the mistake of searching for a vanity number on their site, we were considering using a service like theirs, but determined it would be more cost effective to proceed with an in house system. Unfortunately the number we wanted which was available, was locked down by GotVmail for 15 days because we hit the next button on their website, there was no disclaimer about number locking. We waited the 15 days during which I made the second mistake of calling them inquiring about the 15 days, which then led the number to be reserved for a longer period of time. We were already on a short time schedule, and now thanks to them we had to move onto a generic number to get up and running. By them locking the number down did not assure sales for them it just made everything more difficult for us. Reserving numbers without the customer actually requesting them to be reserved seems highly unethical.
