Small-business owners, what are you doing to stand out from the crowd? Each week, we focus on an entrepreneur who has lessons to share that we think will resonate with other small-business owners.
Ron Asher, founder of online moving marketplace Relocation.com, answers our questions:
What are you doing to stand out from the crowd?
Through original articles, tip sheets, interactive tools and other resources, we’re able to help consumers who are planning to relocate. Moving companies like our service because they gain access to a pool of consumers who are, in effect, ready to buy.
What's the best part about owning your own business?
Having the freedom and flexibility to recognize and implement new ideas. One of the biggest joys of being a small business owner is that you can come with an idea, plan it out, and then make it happen.
What's the biggest challenge of owning your own business?
There’s never a time where I can “turn off.” As an Internet company, we face constant competition. I need to be alert and on top of everything going on in the industry.
Name: Ron Asher
Business: Relocation.com, an online marketplace that offers moving advice and connects professional movers with customers.
Industry: Online Marketing
Location: New York
Year founded: 2000
Number of employees: 30
Web address: www.relocation.com
What's the biggest hurdle you've overcome?
Creating a full-fledged business on a start-up budget. Since I had to build everything from the ground up, figuring out how to apply my limited resources in the most efficient manner was critical.
What's the biggest mistake you've made?
I launched Relocation.com too hastily. In my eagerness to own the business category, I moved forward without having the proper technological infrastructure in place. While I did get a jump on the competition, I ended up spending much more on building up the site’s back-end systems than if I had built them upfront.
What's the best business advice you can offer?
Good ideas are just ideas until you act on them. So my advice is: Believe in yourself, believe in your product and then do it.
