In Focus: Spa Owner Pampers Underserved Male Clients

September 15, 2008
Small-business owners, you deserve a moment in the spotlight. In this regular column, we highlight entrepreneurs from all over the U.S. who can answer the question: "What makes you stand out from the crowd?" We know you're proud of your accomplishments — now you can tell the world about them, too.

Bob Patrizi, owner of Halo [For Men], answers our questions:

What makes you stand out from the crowd?

The fact that Halo [For Men] is just that: for men. I’ve chosen a concept that caters specifically to the underserved male population. We hire excellent stylists who know men’s cuts and shapes. Also, our hours of operation cater to the working man. We know men sometimes procrastinate when it comes to making appointments. That’s why we’re open late, seven days a week and on most major holidays.

What's the best part about owning your own business?

Self-fulfillment is a big thing for me. As a business owner, not only am I liable for my own actions, everything I do affects the outcome of my business. That can, of course, be stressful. But for me, making my own decisions and being able to see the results is truly the best part.

What's the biggest hurdle you've overcome?

The biggest hurdle has to be hiring and working with hairstylists, as well as navigating their often unpredictable emotions. And most recently, I’ve found it challenging to stay up-to-date on the constantly changing zoning laws within the various cities where Halo [For Men] has locations, as well as adhering to altering landlord regulations.

What's the best business advice you can offer?

Do what you love and the money will follow. Whatever you are passionate about, go for it.
